ABOUT THE ARTIST
Alyson Hayes — Ceramic Light Sculptures
Alyson’s lights are quiet keepers of emotion — honouring the soft power of nature and the beauty found in stillness.
Alyson Hayes is an Australian ceramic artist whose sculptural light forms invite quiet reflection and a deeper sense of reconnection with nature.
Working from her studio nestled within Sydney bushland, Alyson creates intricate ceramic light sculptures using Bone China slip, a material celebrated for its delicate translucency. When illuminated, each form glows from within, revealing intricate textures and impressions drawn from bark, seed pods, leaves and other fragments gathered from the forest floor.
Her practice explores the emotional resonance of natural texture, light and form. Rooted in the belief that nature is the ultimate designer, Alyson transforms the delicate traces of the natural world into luminous objects that hold both physical and emotional presence.
Her acclaimed Understory series captures the detritus of the forest — leaves, seeds and bark — not as symbols of decay, but as part of an ongoing cycle of regeneration. Each work carries a memory of stillness and connection, reflecting the artist’s time spent walking through nature, collecting fragments and observing the quiet processes of the land.
Through light, Alyson transforms these impressions into intimate encounters — sculptural vessels that hold not only the imprint of nature, but a feeling of it.

MEDIUM & TECHNIQUE
Alyson combines slip casting with hand-building techniques to create individually formed Bone China sculptures. While each work belongs to a recognisable visual language, no two pieces are exactly alike.
The natural textures impressed into the clay create subtle variations across every surface, while the translucency of the Bone China allows light to move gently through the form.
Each sculpture is mounted on a timber base with internal LED lighting, carefully positioned to reveal the tonal subtleties and organic textures within.
Artist Statement
My work reflects the solace and reverence I find in wild spaces. Through light, I seek to illuminate nature’s imprints and awaken our emotional memory — to bring the outside in and remind us that we are not separate from nature, but deeply part of it.
